How the Boiler Upgrade Scheme works

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is the UK Government grant for replacing fossil fuel heating with an air source heat pump in England and Wales. It's worth £7,500 for most homes — and £9,000 where the home is currently heated by oil or LPG, the most expensive fuels to run. The grant is claimed by your MCS certified installer, not by you: we apply on your behalf and the amount comes straight off your quoted price, so a typical installation starts from around £3,000 after the grant.

Who qualifies for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

Homeowners in England and Wales replacing a fossil fuel or electric heating system in an existing home — including private landlords and second-home owners. Most new-build properties are excluded, except self-builds.

How much is the heat pump grant worth?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant is £7,500 towards an air source heat pump — rising to £9,000 for homes currently heated by oil or LPG. It never needs repaying.

Do I need to apply for the grant myself?

No. Your MCS certified installer applies on your behalf and the grant is deducted straight from your installation price — you simply pay the after-grant amount.

Can renters get the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?

The application must come from the property owner. If you rent, your landlord can apply — many do, since a heat pump raises the EPC rating of their property.
