What solar actually saves you

A well-sized solar system in England typically cuts electricity bills by 50–80%, worth £600–£1,100 a year at current rates. A standard 4kWp array generates around 3,400 kWh per year — close to the average home's entire annual usage. Anything you don't use is exported to the grid and paid for through the Smart Export Guarantee at 5p–15p per unit, and with 0% VAT on domestic installations the economics are the strongest they have ever been.

The real variable is how much of your own generation you use. Homes that run appliances in daylight hours self-consume more; pairing panels with battery storage lifts self-consumption from around 35% to over 75% and shortens payback further.

How our process works

Panels and hardware we install

We are not tied to a single manufacturer. We design with tier-one hardware — panels from Trina Solar, JA Solar and DMEGC, and inverters and storage from FoxESS, Sigenergy, Tesla and AlphaESS — choosing whatever combination genuinely suits your roof and budget. Every system comes with a minimum 25-year panel performance warranty.

Will it work on your roof?

Most pitched roofs in England are suitable. South-facing is the textbook ideal, but east/west splits perform well and spread generation across the day. Slate, tile, metal and flat roofs are all installable with the right mounting system. Listed buildings and some conservation areas need permission — we check this as part of the survey, and most installations fall under permitted development with no planning needed.

Solar panel FAQs

How much do solar panels cost to install?

A typical 4kWp domestic system in England costs around £5,000–£7,000 installed. Larger systems and premium panels cost more, which is why we quote from a real survey rather than a guess over the phone.

How long do solar panels take to install?

Most domestic solar installations are completed in 1–2 days once scaffolding is up. Design, DNO notification and scaffold typically add 2–4 weeks before installation day.

Do solar panels work on cloudy days?

Yes — panels generate from daylight, not just direct sun. Output is lower on overcast days, but a well-designed system is sized around realistic annual UK generation, cloud included.

Which direction should my roof face?

South-facing is ideal, but east/west arrays perform well — typically 80–85% of a south-facing system, with generation spread more evenly across the day. Even north-facing roofs can stack up; we model your exact roof before recommending anything.

Is there any grant for solar panels?

There is currently 0% VAT on domestic solar installations, and the Smart Export Guarantee pays you for every unit you export. Some households qualify for ECO4 support — we check eligibility during your free assessment.
