It is the single most common question we get asked about air source heat pumps: will it still heat my home when it’s freezing outside? It’s a fair worry — a machine that pulls warmth out of cold air sounds like it should give up the moment the temperature drops. The short answer is that it doesn’t. Heat pumps work through UK winters, and they work in countries far colder than ours.
Where the heat comes from
An air source heat pump doesn’t create heat, it moves it. Even air that feels bitterly cold to us still holds usable thermal energy — physicists measure temperature from absolute zero, which is –273°C, so 0°C is nowhere near “no heat left”. The refrigerant inside a heat pump boils at a very low temperature, absorbs energy from that outside air, and a compressor then concentrates it to a temperature useful for your radiators and hot water.
That’s why the machines keep functioning well below freezing. Manufacturers such as Vaillant, Worcester Bosch and Ideal Heating rate their units to deliver heat down to around –15°C to –25°C — colder than almost anywhere in England realistically gets. Norway and Sweden, where winters routinely sit below –20°C, have some of the highest heat pump adoption rates in the world.
What actually changes in the cold
The honest part: a heat pump does become less efficient as it gets colder, because the temperature gap it has to bridge grows. Efficiency is measured by the coefficient of performance — units of heat out per unit of electricity in. On a mild autumn day a good system might run at a COP of 4 or higher. On a hard frosty morning that might fall closer to 2.5.
Crucially, “less efficient” does not mean “not working”. At a COP of 2.5 the heat pump is still delivering two and a half times more heat than the electricity it draws — something no gas boiler or electric heater can do. The seasonal average (SCOP) across a whole UK year typically lands between 3 and 4 for a well-designed system, because the genuinely cold days are a small slice of the year.
What about frost on the unit?
In damp, near-freezing weather a little ice can form on the outdoor unit’s coil. Every modern heat pump handles this automatically with a short defrost cycle — it briefly reverses to melt the frost, then carries on. You might notice a small puff of steam or a pause in the fan; it lasts a few minutes and is completely normal. There is nothing for you to do.
The real determinant is the design, not the weather
If a heat pump ever struggles in winter, the cause is almost always the installation, not the climate. Cold-weather performance depends on:
- A proper heat loss survey — sizing the system room by room for the coldest expected day, not a postcode guess.
- Correctly sized radiators or underfloor heating — so the system delivers heat at a low, efficient flow temperature rather than being pushed hard.
- Sensible controls — heat pumps like to run steadily and gently, keeping the house at a constant temperature, rather than being switched off and blasted back on.
Get those right and the house stays warm through a cold snap without the system labouring. Get them wrong and no amount of clever technology rescues it — which is why every one of our installs starts with a survey rather than an off-the-shelf quote.

One nagging point about winter is that a heat pump runs on electricity, and electricity costs more than gas per unit. Solar panels help year-round — and while winter generation is lower, panels still produce useful power on bright cold days, trimming what you draw from the grid.
