Real installed prices for solar in 2026: what a 4kWp system costs, what moves the price up or down, and how to compare quotes properly.
Typical installed prices in 2026
For a straightforward installation on a standard pitched roof in England:
- 3kWp (7–8 panels) — roughly £4,500–£5,500
- 4kWp (10–11 panels) — roughly £5,000–£7,000
- 6kWp (14–16 panels) — roughly £7,500–£9,500
- Add battery storage (10 kWh) — roughly £3,000–£5,000 on top
All prices include scaffolding, installation, and MCS certification, with 0% VAT already applied. Every home is different — treat these as sanity-check ranges, not quotes.
What moves the price
Roof complexity. Multiple aspects, dormers, steep pitches or difficult access add scaffold and labour time. Slate costs more to work on than concrete tile.
Panel choice. Standard tier-one panels versus premium high-efficiency models can swing a 4kWp system by several hundred pounds. Premium panels earn their keep on small roofs where every square metre counts.
Inverter type. A hybrid inverter (battery-ready) costs more than a string inverter but saves money if you add storage later.
Electrical work. Older consumer units sometimes need upgrading — a proper survey catches this before the quote, not after.
How to compare quotes
Insist every quote states the system size (kWp), panel and inverter brands with warranty terms, the estimated annual generation with the assumptions shown, and whether scaffolding and MCS certification are included. A cheap quote that excludes scaffolding isn’t cheap.
Beware of pressure pricing — “sign today and it’s £2,000 less” is the oldest trick in the industry, and reputable installers don’t need it.
What you get back
At 2026 electricity prices a well-sized system saves £600–£1,100 a year, plus Smart Export Guarantee income on everything you export. Typical payback is 5–8 years against a system life of 25+ years. The maths is simple; the design is what makes it true. Start with a survey, not a brochure.
