Solar Panel Maintenance: What It Actually Involves (Very Little)

Do solar panels need cleaning? Servicing? What breaks and when? An honest guide to maintaining a solar PV system over its 25-year life.

One of solar’s best features gets talked about least: once installed, a good system mostly just sits there generating. Here’s what maintenance genuinely looks like over 25 years.

Cleaning: usually the rain’s job

In the UK, panels mounted at a normal roof pitch are largely self-cleaning — rain washes off dust, pollen and most bird mess. Panels rarely need manual cleaning unless you’re next to a busy road, under a popular tree, or have panels installed nearly flat. If output drops noticeably in summer, a professional clean (never a pressure washer) restores it. Most of our customers never book one.

Monitoring: the maintenance you do from the sofa

Every system we install comes with app monitoring. Thirty seconds a month is enough: if generation looks normal for the season, all is well. A string dropping to zero, or one panel consistently underperforming through an optimiser’s readout, shows up immediately — and that visibility is what catches the rare fault early, long before a bill does.

What actually wears out

  • Panels — degrade slowly, losing around 0.4% output per year. Modern panels carry 25–30 year performance warranties and typically still produce 85%+ of original output at year 25. Failures are rare.
  • The inverter — the hardest-working component. Expect to replace a string inverter once in the system’s life, typically after 10–15 years (a planned cost of roughly £500–£1,000). Many now carry 10–12 year warranties.
  • Batteries — rated for thousands of cycles; 10-year warranties are standard, and modern LFP chemistry routinely outlasts them.
  • Fixings and cabling — should last the life of the system if specified properly. On coastal jobs (the Fylde, Sefton coast, the Wirral) that means corrosion-resistant hardware from day one, which is how we install as standard.

Is an annual service required?

Not for warranty on most modern domestic systems. A periodic electrical health check every few years is good practice — connections, isolators, inverter diagnostics — and cheap insurance. What matters more is having an installer who still answers the phone. We’ve been installing renewables since 2017; aftercare from a local team is part of what you’re buying.

The takeaway

Budget for one inverter swap mid-life, glance at the app monthly, and let the weather do the cleaning. As home upgrades go, solar is about as close to fit-and-forget as it gets.
